about

This is the first compilation of music from the Renku challenge. www.naviarrecords.com/about/renku

Haiku poetry has its roots in a genre of Japanese collaborative poetry called Renku, which consists of two different stanzas: the image developed in the first one (a three-line verse, the origin of haiku) is contrasted to (or augmented by) a related image in the final two-lines. The juxtaposition of the two stanzas produces more meaning than either part could by itself. These two sections are written by two different poets: hence the idea of using renku poetry to create a new music project.

The poems that inspired these tracks are:

Renku001

in azure sky
the waning moon's
daybreak

in the autumn lake
Mt. Hira's first frost

By Kyorai & Basho www.2hweb.net/haikai/renku/Link_Shift.html#omokage

Renku002

Longing for
the Narrow Road of Oku
two together

the homeless man
still lost in memory

By Tarô Miyashita & Penny Harter www.2hweb.net/haikai/renku/hankasen/Typhoon.html

Renku003

it's the ocean
you can smell from here,
the boundless sky above

the wild pearl
unaware of imperfection
